Ashish Joshi Portrait

Award winning international correspondent and news presenter

Ashish Joshi is an award-winning international correspondent and news presenter. With  more than 20 years experience in television journalism he has covered many of the world’s major news events.

In February 2009 Ashish was appointed Sky’s first Gulf Correspondent. Based in Dubai Ashish reports from across the region.

As a frontline reporter Ashish is usually one of the first journalists dispatched to cover major breaking news stories. His assignments often take him to remote and dangerous locations.

In 2004 Ashish was the first UK journalist to be dispatched to Sri Lanka to cover the devastation of the Asian Tsunami. His coverage included a world exclusive on the deaths of 1500 passengers aboard the Galle Express as the train was struck by the giant wave.

Ashish returned to Sri Lanka throughout the next 12 months to record the plight of the coastal communities as they struggled to rebuild their lives. He was a New York Television Festival Awards 2005 finalist in the Best News Reporter/Correspondent category and winner of a silver award for a series of documentaries on the aftermath of the Tsunami.

Ashish was one of the few international correspondents who managed to report from the mountains of the Kaghan Valley in Kashmir following a catastrophic earthquake in 2005.

Later that year he reported on the civil war in Sri Lanka ahead of a crucial Presidential election. Ashish traveled across Tamil Tiger held territory in the north east of the island. His interview with guerilla leader SP Thamilselvan was one of the last recorded with the Tamil Tiger rebel before he was assassinated in a Sri Lankan air force strike.

Ashish also covered the 7/7 London bombings, the Lebanon War and the 2006 Football World Cup in Germany.

He also covered the abduction of Madeleine McCann from Portugal. Ashish reported on the fall of Silvio Berlusconi during Italy’s 2006 general election.

In 2008 Ashish gained exclusive access to knife offenders inside Britain’s jails to lead Sky News’ special coverage devoted to the issue. Ashish also reports regularly from America.

His reporting of the Mumbai terror attacks in December 2008 has won critical and public acclaim.  The coverage won Sky News a Golden
Nymph at the 2009 Monte Carlo Television Festival and was nominated for a BAFTA.

Since moving to the Gulf Ashish has covered the Iranian Presidential elections, reported from Afghanistan and joined the hunt for Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. He also reported from Indonesia following the Sumatra earthquake.

Before joining Sky News in 2004, Ashish spent 10 years at the Asian broadcaster ZEE TV where he was Head of News and Current
Affairs (Europe).
